Virtually Real Food

Manchester Friends of the Earth have just produced a new website about real food. The concept of an online real food guide was born last summer when Manchester Friends of the Earth updated their printed guide, produced originally in 2002. Instead of producing another printed guide, Manchester Friends of the Earth decided to convert the work into an online resource to make it easier for readers to contribute and to help ensure the information in the guide is kept up-to-date.

screen shot of the real food guide web site As well as describing what real food is, and the different ways of obtaining it, Manchester Friends of the Earth have added a number of real-life case studies: people describing what it is like to shop by these alternatives and how it fits in with their lifestyles; and growers and independent distributors talking about the services that they offer and their personal approach.

The site is structured around four questions: what is real food; why eat it; how to get it; and where to find it? There are also articles by Colin Tudge, three times Glaxo/ABSW Science Writer of the Year, and Zac Goldsmith, editor of The Ecologist. And to help you get real, there's a handy directory of suppliers and retailers of real food in the Manchester area.

The guide was launched on 13 March 2004.
