People are aiming to set up a network of Manchester residents who provide temporary accommodation and practical help to destitute asylum seekers. When someone is claiming asylum they are supported by the government and not allowed to work. When their claim fails, their support is cut off and they are evicted, but still not allowed to work. Deportation, if it is even possible, can take years. This makes people homeless. They are not "illegal" at this point, they just cease to exist or to require food and shelter, apparently.
The way Hosts for Hope works is that you provide a room for free for as long as you want, on your terms eg you can ask the person to leave the house when you do, can provide meals or not, from one night to a month and so on. If you are interested, get in touch.
