Environment Forum Seeks Support

Some of you may have noticed that the Manchester Environment Forum has been quiet of late. The founders of the Forum (Matt Szabo, Tom Macmillan and Matthew Wilkinson) are either busy with academic work or moving on to other things. Fortunately, several people have expressed an interest in continuing the Forum next academic year and Forum activities should recommence sometime in the Autumn. However, they still need one or two more people to help run the Forum, hence if anybody from the Manchester area wants to get actively involved please contact the Forum via [email protected] or Matt Szabo directly at [email protected].

The Forum is in a stage of transition and new directions may well be taken, whatever happens however, the Forum will remain focussed on engendering discussion between environmentally concerned academics and local actors engaged in grassroots or professional environmental projects. With this telos in mind, we have placed a "virtual" discussion paper on the forum website which suitably captures the ideals of the Forum in a concise and accessible piece of academic work. Dave Horton ([email protected])'s paper - "Computers, Cars and Televisions: The Role of Objects in Cultivating Sustainable Lifestyles" (which some of you may remember from the Forum conference in January), builds a useful bridge between activists and academics and indicates the role "theory" can play in supporting grass-roots environmental initiatives.
