Routes to Help
A new service is providing support for refugees and asylum seekers. The Routes Project is aimed at refugee and asylum seeking families with children aged between 5 and 13 who have recently arrived in Manchester. The project will assist the families, who have come from difficult circumstances and will often be vulnerable, in settling into their new local communities by making links with vital services such as dentists, doctors and schools, and supporting them with housing and benefits issues by introducing them to other groups from their country of origin. There will also be play packs available for children living in temporary accommodation and particularly for those still without a school place.
This unique and innovative project consists of five project workers, centrally based in Hulme, who speak nine languages between them and have access to interpreters. They will make home visits to families as well as accompany them on visits to services, as and when needed.
Families can contact Routes directly (see below) or be referred to the project by other services or friends with the family's permission. The project is funded by The Children's Fund and managed by the Bibini Centre for Young People - a Manchester charity providing residential and support services primarily to black young people and their families.
