Su Family Stays

Lian Hu Su, his wife Xiao Fang and their three children Miao, Jing and Zhao live in Dukinfield. Mr Su fled persecution in China in 1992 and he and his family fear for their lives if they were forced to return. The family received a letter from the Home Office on 17 October granting indefinite leave to remain in the UK. The decision was made on the basis of length of residence, the children having lived here for more than 7 years.

Their success is due to a hard fought campaign over the last three and a half years. The campaign generated a lot of television and press coverage, mainly because of the strong support the family received from the schools that the children were attending, Astley High School and Lyndhurst County Primary School. The head teachers of both schools were prepared to protect the children from deportation. Mr Mayes, the head teacher of Astley High School, was even prepared to sacrifice his job for the children.

The Su family have other causes to celebrate. Jing Hong Su achieved 10 GCSE's this year, 7 were grade A* and 3 grade A. And 17 October was Miao Hong Su's 18th birthday. Did the Home Office time their decision to give her the perfect present?
