Under the Pavement

logo: under the pavement "Under the Pavement" is an explosive new radio show which broadcasts on Tuesdays every 4 weeks on Manchester's ALL FM 96.9 community radio station, serving Ardwick, Longsight, Levenshulme and beyond. The show, which takes its name from the Paris 1968 situationalist slogan "under the paving stones, the beach", reports on Manchester's radical and activist communities.

"Manchester has a rich radical heritage", says David, a local resident and one of the team of presenters. "It's a very diverse city, with a lot of radical and progressive activity. We see the radio show as a way of giving voice to this culture of resistance".

The show has already made links with a variety of local groups and campaigns. Loombreaker, Manchester's monthly direct action round up, provide the news content, the Networking Newsletter Project is behind the the what's on guide and a show at the end of October linked up with BeyondTV, an independent video/film project.

The show has been broadcasting since July and already has had a diverse range of guests including Gee Vaucher from Crass, a local activist from the Stop Esso campaign and a member of the Greater Manchester Coalition Against Sanctions and War on Iraq. As well as talk they play a wide mix of music including folk, country, electronic, indie, poetry and spoken word. As Emma Goldman said, "If I can't dance I don't want to be in your revolution."

"Access or community radio stations are non-profit distributing, neighbourhood radio stations that exist to provide a platform for communities' talents and aspirations", said a spokesperson for ALL FM 96.9. It is hoped that such stations will act as "social cement" in areas where informal social networks have been eroded - a catalyst for regeneration connecting the work of groups and statutory agencies with the residents that they serve.

Dates of shows for the remainder of the year are Tuesday 19 November and Tuesday 7 December from 10pm until midnight on 96.9 FM.
