Don't Let the Pools Sink
In March 1993, Manchester City Council closed Victoria Baths despite strong local opposition. Last summer Gorton Tub was closed - again this was clearly against the wishes of local people. Manchester is not alone. The Victoria Baths Trust has made contact with campaigns around Britain where local people are fighting to retain local swimming facilities. The latest closure we know of is Swiss Cottage in London, where two 33m pools in a period building are to be redeveloped and "improved" into one modern 25m pool.
Now a national campaign Right to Swim is being launched. Swimmers and all those connected with swimming, who want to make their voices heard on a national website, are invited to contribute.
