The Victoria Baths are a Grade II* listed swimming complex in Chorton on Medlock which were closed by Manchester City Council for economic reasons in 1993. (Readers of the Networking Newsletter will note that history repeated itself last year when the council closed Gorton Tub for similar reasons.) Local campaigners have been working hard over the last 8 years to reopen Victoria Baths. However, it is now in disrepair with lots of leaks and extensive dry rot.
Fortunately, The Friends of Victoria Baths have been granted aid to carry out urgent repair work to the Baths. The money, £150,000 from English Heritage and £96,000 from the city council's SRB budget, will be used to repair the roofs between May and August.
The group also submitted evidence on the need for local swimming facilities and the high burden of VAT on renovation projects to the Government's inquiry into the Sport of Swimming.
