Animal rights campaigners monitor the zoo regularly and have detailed concerns about many of the animals. Some of the animals are kept in solitary confinement in small enclosures with no stimulation, the roller coasters from the adjoining fun fair thunder past many of the animals every 4 minutes, and the zoo has been criticised by vets and other animal experts. We have secured homes for some of the animals in sanctuaries but generally the zoo refuses to release them to a better life. The owner is also currently awaiting trial for not having the correct licence to display endangered animals.
We manage to turn away over half the people planning to visit the zoo by showing them photos of the conditions, and most of those who do go in sign our petition and send a protest card to the council. This is a very achievable campaign to close one of the worst zoos in the country and rehome some of the animals to sanctuaries.
