Manchester United Fowl the CountrysideGreen campaigners have put the boot into Manchester United's plans to build a £10 million training centre. Friends of the Earth (FoE) launched their own campaign strip in a battle to save 110 acres of green belt land in Carrington, near Sale. Club bosses want to build a complex with football pitches, cycle and running tracks, a goalkeeper training area and hydrotherapy pool.
Keith Reynolds of Trafford FoE said, "The club's plans will wipe out 110 acres of productive farm land, the livelihood of a farming family and destroy the wildlife rich habitat." Nobody at Manchester United was prepared to comment.
