Labour Hawks its Morals

A new government brought hope that Labour would cancel any existing licences for weapons exports to Indonesia. After a promising signal from Robin Cook about commitments to human rights during his new Foreign Policy mission statement, he has now indicated that he will not revoke export licences signed by the previous government and that the new 16 Hawk fighter aircraft deal with Indonesia will go ahead later this year - despite Indonesia's appalling human rights record and the ongoing brutal occupation of East Timor.

As usual, politicians and in particular Labour, are long on rhetoric and short on action. Campaigners will need to keep up the pressure by lobbying, writing letters and nonviolent direct action. You can help by joining in one of the following:
